Tánaiste demands Vatican response to Cloyne Report

Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Eamon Gilmore has today demanded a response from the Vatican to the findings of the Cloyne report.

Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Eamon Gilmore has today demanded a response from the Vatican to the findings of the Cloyne report.

The 421-page investigation into clerical abuse which was published yesterday, criticised the Vatican for its response to Irish child protection guidelines.

Minister Gilmore held talks with the Papal Nuncio Guiseppe Leanza this afternoon, who said he was "distressed" by the report, but did not issue any apology.

The Tánaiste said that the Government will not let the matter rest until a formal explanation is given by the Holy See.

"He told me that he [Leanza] would convey to the Vatican the report, the Government's views on the report," said Minister Gilmore.

"We're not going to let it rest that simply the report being conveyed and so on - we want a response from the Vatican to this report, and I have asked formally for that."
