So about a month ago, my A/C compressor started making more noise than usual, to the point where I can hear it inside the car. However, the compressor only makes noise UNDER 30 MPH; as soon as 3rd or OD kicks in (or I rev like hell), the compressor shuts up. I popped the hood and all the racket is coming from the clutch on the compressor when it starts spinning. The noise completely goes away when I turn the A/C off; no noise when just using the vent or blower fan.

As of now my A/C still works decently, but it's getting noisier. It's hot as hell here in TX right now (95-100 degrees daily and 50%+ humidity) and I think the stress of blasting my A/C everyday is finally catching up to me.

Do I need a completely new compressor? What is parts and labor going to cost me to fix this issue?

Here's the sound in question:

I'm in the same boat. I have a bearing that is going out. I haven't found a good solution either, beyond wait 'til it dies, save until then, and then replace once it dies.

I am all in for a better answer, however.

My post must have not posted. Its counterintuative to just throw money at a car and hope to solve a problem but my advice is to replace the clutch yourself and see if it makes a difference. It sounds like the clutch is slipping.

I would replace the bearing before it completely fails. a bearing is Cheap... should be under $10
Ignoring it and seizing the compressor costing $250+ fluid etc etc etc can run $800 or more.

Noise with clutch engaged is 99% a internal issue, likely compressor replacement time... The clutch idler bearing(read cheap fix) makes noise even when disengaged...

Bah! U got me again! I missed that fact!
Still u dont want to wait for the compressor to implode and spread tons of contamination throughout the system!
also, if u replace the compressor, replace that Accumulator next to it, it is ready to fail anyway! Just had mine rust out even though the car is always garaged...
