This workshop will explore how to better work with, support and advocate for patients who identify as sexual or gender diverse. Participants will hear personal experiences and stories, learn terminology and theory, and discuss what you can do as a caregiver to improve the health care experience for this often marginalized and vulnerable population.

Objectives:

• Understand the lived and learned realities of sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ) patients
• Explore and engage with LGBTQ* terminology
• Breaking down the myths and misunderstandings about transgender people
• Skills in creating a safe, supportive and nurturing environment for people of a sexual or gender minority
• Skills in communicating with and about sexual or gender minority people in a way that is respectful and meaningful

Tammy Trout Wood (RN MN) is a Sexual and Reproductive Health Specialist with the Sexual and Reproductive Health Program, Alberta Health Services. Tammy works with the education and health promotion team to promote healthy sexuality across the lifespan where she specializes in resource development and building capacity of health care providers. Tammy also works as a clinic nurse in the sexual and reproductive health clinics.

Heather Cobb is a Sexual Health Promotion Specialist with the Sexual and Reproductive Health Program, Alberta Health Services in Calgary. As an education and training professional, Heather’s education includes a Bachelor of Sciences in sociology and psychology and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the UK. Areas of focus and particular interest for Heather include normalizing sexuality in the family, and sexuality and disability.

Marni Panas is a consultant with Engagement & Patient Experience, Alberta Health Services. She has been invited to share her experiences and expertise in community engagement, facilitation, Patient & Family Centred Care, loss, and inclusive health and cultural safety for LGBTQ patients and their families locally, nationally and internationally. Marni is also a transgender woman who has been very transparent throughout her journey in the hopes of fostering acceptance through education and respectful dialogue.
