Witches, Trolls, Nasty Cheerleaders, 'Oops' Kinda Wishes..... Ally's sixteenth birthday is everything but sweet! Wow, what an adventure she's in for! The author creates her own kind of magic as she whisks you away to another world full of courage, fantastical elements, and, yes, even laugh out loud humor! This is one book I will be keeping and re-reading! This is definitely an Author to Watch, and I look forward to more of her stuff!--Holly Gallegos

About the author

Julie Wright (1972-still breathing) was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. She's lived in LA, Boston, and the literal middle of nowhere (don't ask). She wrote her first book when she was fifteen. Since then, she's written twenty-three novels and coauthored three. Julie is a two-time winner of the Whitney award for best romance with her books "Cross My Heart" and "Lies Jane Austen Told Me." The America Library Association listed “Glass Slippers, Ever After, and Me” in their 2020 top ten best romances and "A Captain for Caroline Gray" in their 2021 top ten best romances. Her book "Death Thieves" was a Whitney finalist.
She has one husband, five kids, two grandbabies, one dog, and a varying amount of houseplants (depending on attrition).
She loves writing, reading, traveling, hiking, playing with her kids, and watching her husband make dinner.
She used to speak fluent Swedish, but now speaks only well enough to cuss out her children in public.
She hates mayonnaise.

Honestly, this has to be the best coming of age witch book I've read in ages. Perfect for the teen reader, it also draws in to the imagination of those older. Who doesn't think it would be cool to find out that they are actually a witch? Unfortunately for Ally, she didn't read the letter her grandmother had sent, so she haphazardly realized, after the fact, that she was casting spells on people.
A fun and easy read, this book flows pretty smoothly from start to finish. There are a few small bumps in the road that makes the story a bit jumpy, but all in all, it takes you for a ride that you just don't want to end. Witches and trolls have their places. A "ghost" from the past is on the prowl to get to Ally. You have your classic high school bully who gets a taste of her own medicine but than doesn't seem to know when enough is enough. A love interest that may either grow into something more or run for the hills.
The rules on what can and can't be influenced by magic are smart choices by the author. It gives the magic depth, clarity and a control. Too many times we read about witches and magic and there just doesn't seem to be a start and stopping point to them, which makes for a chaotic story line. I don't know if the author will be writing more about Ally, her magic and her family but if she did, I will read it.
Some of the book reminded me of the bumblings of Samantha in the series Bewitched and of the series,Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. Both trying to do what is right but sometimes things getting in the way and setting off a chain of events that made you giggle but also warmed you at the same time. This is a book that even though it's about witches and magic, will also warm you because of other messages that come through.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2014This book was really cute. It brings in some wonderful elements like believing in yourself and leaning on family to help get you through tough times. This is also a great coming of age tale for this young Troll Kivanna (witch). Ally is one of a select few women that have power in them taken from the Trolls long ago. When she turns 16 she comes into her power, unbeknownst to her, and all sorts of terrible things start happening that seem to be the product of her mindless wishes she only thinks in her head. She learns all this, and that she must now go through a trial of her powers from her Paternal Grandmother. Ally goes to these trials being incredibly anxious after having been threatened to surrender her powers or the boy she has a crush on may be killed at any moment. The outcome is great to read about and it definitely leaves room for many more books in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2014I've read loads of different novels based on witches and witchcraft but this one felt fresh and original. I loved Ally's character! She is spunky, witty, and quick-thinking. She is a social underdog thanks to a jealous nemesis but manages to stay positive (and eventually stands up for herself in a truly profound way--using honesty!). I hope that Mrs. Wright decides to keep going with this type of book! :)

I was drawn to this book based completely on the cover and when I read the blurb, I got so excited when I seen
"ancient Sweden". I love Sweden and the idea of having some cool, old time magic was a really great idea to me.
However, I didn't really get as hooked on this book as I thought I would.
The beginning was good. I liked how the chapters started with "Note to self". It added something original to an otherwise not so original plot.
I tend to roll my eyes at any YA book what has Salem and witches in the same sentence in it's synopsis. It's not original and extremely overused, in my opinion. I could go the rest of my life without reading another Salem/witch book.
So that was a big down fall for me in Spell Check.
I was okay with the characters. I didn't hate them but I didn't gush over them. Ally was slow at times and that was a little annoying. I wanted to hit her over the head a few times.
One thing that I noticed and thought was kinda cool was how Spell Check it a really clean, fun book. You could give it to a 13 year old just getting into reading and it'd be fine.
Overall, Spell Check is okay for me. I might want to go back in a year or two and give it another try but as of the end of 2014, I wasn't really feeling it. But I think Spell Check is a great starter YA or if you're just looking for something short and easy to read, you might really like this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2014Imagine if suddenly on your 16th birthday everything that you wished for came true. This is what happens to the main character in Spell Check. Suddenly Allyson has to be careful what she wishes for because her wishes have unintentional consequences like sending her parents to the Amazon to battle anacondas. She learns from her grandmother that she is basically a witch and that her ancestors gained their magic from the trolls. She will have to go through the troll trials to prove worthy to hold it. This is just such a fun clean read that is perfect for younger audiences as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking Read!
Totally wonderful book! I love Paranormal writing and this book completely deliverd it for me. I also love the reference to Swedish Mythology too. I love that someone as young as Allyson can go through bullying from her peers but when she wishes for things to go wrong for her tormenters and they come true she quickly puts things right when she realises that her wishes have come true and feels truly awful for doing these things to her bullies. Cracking read!

4.0 out of 5 stars For YA readers of any age
If you're old enough to remember the movie "Teen Witch", and having loved it, then "Spell Check" is an easy recommendation.
It's a fun YA novel featuring magic, adventure and a bit of romance.
It does read like a classic 90's teen-movie at times, with a lead character that is just loveable. The authors voice feels original, and there's plenty of humour to it. With no violence nor sexual situations it's recommendable for young readers and mature readers looking for some easy entertainment alike.
Personally I loved every page of it and felt a little sad when it was time to say good-bye, a good story is always to short.
While, to me, not quite as compelling a read as Kerstin Gier's Emerald-Trilogy I would say that fans of those books will like "Spell Check" equally well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great witchy story
Ally finds out that she had powers on Halloween, when she accidentally curses most of the cheerleading squad after a vicious prank was played on her. Unfortunately, Ally can't stop wishing, and she can't stop the way that her wishes turn out which, usually, is badly. When her Swedish Grandma turns up on the doorstep, Ally realises there is something else she should be worrying about.. her impending trials that will secure her powers... or kill her.
This story is really good. It has everything you could possibly want in a piece of YA fiction. Issues to do with your family, ranging from fighting parents to mad Grandmas and annoying little brothers, bullying, school, strange and interesting magical abilities and even a bit of romance sprinkled in. May I say though, that I loved the fact that this romance was actually pretty cool because it flowed into the story well and wasn't a sickening kind of puppy love. I liked the morals about believing in yourself and standing up to others, whether that may be bullies, trolls or witches.
Ally is a strong, powerful heroine and saves the day by standing up for her beliefs and not letting others rule her decisions. She is clever and does what she believes to be the right thing, even if she messes it up sometimes. She has a very good character arc as she gradually finds out that she is a witch and learns about her powers and how they work. She does grow up in this book and realises that sometimes parents aren't meant to be together. She learns not ot be selfish and to accept the human nature of others, even if she can't stand them.
The world building is really good. I loved the way that things that happened in the past were brought into the book by with magic to make an image in your head, rather than the character simply being told the events. It makes it much more memorable and gave the ideas more meaning. I also liked the trials and the descriptions of their home. I'd have liked to know a bit more about how the magic works and what exactly it feels like to control it as it was a little bit vague on the details.
For a short book, there is a lot packed in and to be honest it was a little bit too short for me. I'd have also liked a bit more difficulty in setting things right or perhaps a couple more challenging predicaments for Ally before the book ended. There will definitely be more books and I will be looking out for them so I know what happens with Ally and her new powers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read
I enjoyed this book very realistic to for a teenager to go through if it really happened felt a little rushed at the end though would have been nice to see where it lead
