Pre-Season

Sleeper – Micah Richards

The previous season was one to forget for Micah Richards. Having served up a series of rampaging runs down the flank in City’s title-winning 2011/12 campaign, the right-back was more accustomed to the treatment room than the Etihad turf after a couple of injuries made a significant impact on his game time:

Sidelined at the start of the campaign after picking up an ankle problem on Olympic duty with Great Britain, Richards’s absence afforded Pablo Zabaleta the chance to nail down the right-back role at the Etihad last time round. Returning to the first-team in Gameweek 7, Richards helped Roberto Mancini’s side register two clean sheets in three appearances – their first of the season – before being stretchered from the field in the Gameweek 9 home win over Swansea with knee ligament damage.

Despite his manager’s claims that the knee injury was only a short-term worry, Richards underwent surgery and subsequently failed to make another league appearance until Gameweek 32, in a narrow home win over Wigan. The right-back managed to force his way back into first-team contention over the club’s final few fixtures and, having started each of the last three Gameweeks of the season, ended the campaign with five clean sheets from just seven appearances in what ultimately proved a hugely underwhelming title defence for the Etihad outfit.

The Prospects

With Mancini now gone, it remains to be seen just what will become of City’s defence next time round. The Italian’s penchant for full-back rotation proved hugely frustrating in the title-winning campaign and while Fantasy managers could expect a fully-fit Richards to be rotated with Zabaleta under the previous regime, it’s uncertain just how the club’s incoming manager – likely to be Manuel Pellegrini – will utilise his backline options.

Certainly, City’s defence once again proved the most resilient in the Premier League last time out. A total of 34 goals conceded was the most impressive record in the top-flight, while Joe Hart registered 18 clean sheets over the course of the campaign – more than any other keeper and superior to his tally of 17 from 2011/12. While Zabaleta’s eye-catching displays should see his price escalate across the Fantasy games, Richards will either remain steady or even slightly drop – with regards to Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the likeliest scenario would see the Argentine move to 6.5 while Richards’ cost is held at last term’s initial 6.0.

Clearly, if Richards can mirror the attacking form that harvested a goal and six assists in 2011/12, he has the potential to flourish as a relatively cheap route into City’s defence, given that Kompany and Hart are both expected to be retained the premium bracket again. Versatile enough to fill in at centre-back, he could be shifted to the middle alongside Kompany if the new manager decides to rest youngster Matija Nastasic on occasion. With Kolo Toure already off to Liverpool and Aleksandr Kolarov being eyed up by Juventus, the defensive shake-up is already underway as City look to wrestle the title back from David Moyes’ United, though many will be sceptical as to whether they can replicate the resilience instilled by the somewhat cautious Mancini – if Richards can nail down a regular role and earn around 30+ starts, he could be back on our Fantasy radars once again.

Holtby's appearance in tomorrow's match now seems "not to be in danger". He will be able to take part in tonight's final training session.

Rode and Kolasinac should also be able to take part in training after picking up slight knocks.

I’m prototyping a new concept and would appreciate your feedback – the “Consensus RMT”. The idea is to use the "wisdom of crowds" to identify the best players for a fantasy squad. I have surveyed the Euro under-21 RMT posts on here from approx. 5:20pm yesterday to 6:30am this morning. There were a total of 36 RMTs posted. It’s very simple – every time a player is mentioned, he gets an additional vote. I’m interested to know how/if you use this information – could be to pick a template team, or to spot potential differentials. Let me know. If I get positive feedback, I may do a similar thing in the run up to the FPL season.

Here is the "Consensus RMT" team:

    G: Ostbo Zabolotny
D: Dasa Biraghi Dawson Indi Chalobah
M: Isco Holtby Maher Shelvey Singh
    F: Rodrigo DeJong Destro

Breakdown by position as follows, giving the number of votes for each player:
    Goalkeepers
    Ostbo 23
    Zabolotny 14
    Nyland 11
    De Gea 11

      Good work.

I never posted a RMT, but my team (with picks) currently is:

      De Gea (11) Kleyman (1)
      Dawson (23) Caulker (2) Chalobah (12) Martins Indi (15) van Rhijn (10)
      Isco (33) Holtby (33) Altman (11) Verrati (5) Maher (30)
      Rodrigo (33) Smolov (0) Insigne (1)

This was a first draft made when there was still only 88 entries, and I haven't touched it since.

I know Smolov is in the seniors and will miss the first game, but I'll address that problem (and Altman) when I know the Israel line-up.

True, I suppose. But Destro is in 16/36 RMTs. I decided on Insigne (even though he's not an out-and-out forward) because I feel he's more likely to start for sure. I think picking an Italy forward is a bit of a lottery.

It's a wednesday start for MLS this week. It's also a crazy week, I've taken an 8 point hit and I've only got 10 players:

    Shuttleworth
    Gonclaves (c), Baptiste, Traore
    Teibert, Magee, Okugo, Johnson
    McInerney, fagundez

I hope philly starts the week off well and mcininerney and okugo are amongst the points.

Captain choice was a no-brainer... nearly went Fagundez, but playing "safe".

When I was making my team 2 weeks ago I got the impression this game's rules favour defenders over midfielders and strikers. I went 5-4-1, then 5-3-2 first 2 GWs and captained a defender both times. It worked out good the first week, not so good the second. But I'm going to keep with that strategy for now.

Its a fair point that Zab was a favourite of Mancini. The new manager might prefer Richards. However Zab was outstanding last season and it would be hard to see him being dropped.

I think Zabaleta can play leftback too, so there are various permutations.

Ideas re Consensus RMT so far ...

Keep track of who is posting the RMTs 🙂
Compare with ownership % - interesting to see how FFS compares with "world"
Probably need to map price onto it in some way too. The consensus RMT was 2.5 over budget.

    Any other thoughts?
    Thanks

The true consensus team isn't exactly represented. Eg, most teams probably have either Pedersen or Altman to bring the cost down. Sometimes it more a case of say, Isco, Holtby, an England midfielder and two cheapies.

Been lurking and reading the input on here for a couple of days. Thanks to all of you for your efforts!

Was wondering if I could get an RMT on what I think may be my final team.

    Nyland / Kongshavn

Caldirola / Dawson / Dasa / Chalobah / Martins Indi

Isco / Holtby / Thiago Alcántara / Altman / Maher

Dabbur / De Jong / Rodrigo

Reasoning: Planning to WC after the first GW. Will probably have Dabbur as C for first day, he seems to be favored by bookies ahead of Pedersen. Have a sneaking suspicion of a low scoring game Eng v Italy so hence the emphasis on defenders. Spain will just go crazy against Russia....

    Any help or feedback appreciated!

As far as I know yes. Classification is similar to the first team with attacking mids/wide players like Muniain and Tello being listed as forwards.

A bit like Mata and Silva at the Euro's.

Wijnaldum is an attacking midfielder not a winger. 14 goals and 5 assists in 33 for PSV and 8 goals in 21 for the Dutch.

Mlapa has 2 goals and 1 assist for Monchengladbach this season and 8 goals in 20 for the Germans.

      Wijnaldum imo

Shelvey, Eikram, V Ginkel, Sallalich, Holtby

He has been terrific in the games he's played for Molde (who had lost 5 out of 6 matches before Nyland started playing, only lost 1 out of the last 6 now). Same goes for Kongshavn who has put the divisions perhaps best keeper last year on the bench. Østbø was thought to be playing for Viking this season, but since Jarstein remained in the club Østbø has only been loaned out to first division club.

So although Østbø has the most matches for the U21s, both Nyland and Kongshavn are very likely to get minutes, and it seems now that it will be Nyland.
